SYMPOSIUM - Biosecurity Challenges Facing Australia and its RegionPATRICIA GRAY, CHRISTIAN ENEMARK AND MICHAEL SELGELID OF THE NATIONAL CENTRE FOR BIOSECURITY AT ANU PUT TOGETHER THIS HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL SYMPOSIUM. ![]() Professor John MacKenzie (Keynote Speaker), Professor Ian Ramshaw (Director NCB), Professor Tony Cunningham and Professor Alan Dupont. Held at the John Curtin School of Medical Research, ANU over two days included over 90 participants from a wide variety of backgrounds including policy makers, academics, industry representatives and a group of 16 delegates from the Asia-Pacific region. Topics covered ranged from laboratory safety, to public communication in case of an epidemic, to importation times of pandemic influenza to ethical aspects of scientific research. A keynote address by Dr Suwit Wibulpolprasert, from the Ministry of Public Health in Thailand proved a definite highlight. Talking about his experiences with avian influenza, his presentation sparked much interest among the attendees. Funding from the Network enabled guest speakers Professor Malcolm Dando from the University of Bradford (UK) and Professor John MacKenzie (Curtin University, WA) to attend. Professor Dando also delivered a public lecture which was well attended by members of the public who had not attended the symposium. The presenters' slides and a copy of the conference booklet from the symposium are available on the National Centre for Biosecurity's website http://biosecurity.anu.edu.au.
