Network participants surveyA huge THANK YOU to all Network participants who took part in the Network survey issued in February this year. The survey was issued in order to assess the effectiveness of the ARC APFRN to date. The survey was made available to Network Participants to complete online over a 10 day period. Respondents were self-selected and the Network received 125 completed surveys in total. Initial summary results demonstrate the ARC APFRN to be meeting and exceeding its goals and objectives with 97% of respondents stating that they would like to see continued funding of the Network scheme. A summary of responses specifically in relation to 'Assessing the Network' can be found in Appendix A of the 2008 Annual Report available via the following link http://www.sueztosuva.org.au/annual_reports/2008_Annual_Report.pdf A more detailed analysis will be available in the 2009 Annual Report.

Network continues sponsorship of Asian CurrentsThe Network is pleased to announce its continued sponsorship of Asian Currents during 2009. Asian Currents is the ebulletin of the Asian Studies Association of Australia, sponsored by the Network last year. Its aim is to build linkages between Asia experts in Australian universities and those working on Asia in government, business, the media and the wider community. If you would like to contribute - please contact the editor, Francesca Beddie, at fbeddie@infinite.net.au. Asian Currents is a great channel to tell policy makers and others about your work.
Network Management Committee meets in SydneyTHE ARC APFRN MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MET IN SYDNEY THIS MONTH FOR A FULL DAY'S DISCUSSION ON NETWORK ACTIVITIES. THE DAY BEGAN WITH PROFESSOR LOUISE EDWARDS PROVIDING AN OVERVIEW OF THE NETWORK TO DATE WITH EACH NODE CONVENOR PROVIDING AN UPDATE OF THEIR RESPECTIVE REGIONS. ![]() L to R: Louise Edwards, Shahram Akbarzadeh, Margaret Jolly, Colin Brown, Michael Dutton, Nicki Davies, Stephanie Donald, Purnendra Jain (Sisira Jayasuriya unable to attend) The main focus of the day was a review of achievements to date together with discussions as to how funding could be best put to use in the Network's final year of operation. Each Node Convenor gave a summary of events from their respective regions. Unable to attend in person, Prof Sisira Jayasuriya sent a summary report to be read in his absence. The Management Committee thanked Prof Michael Dutton from Griffith University who attended on behalf of Prof Michael Wesley. The afternoon saw a review of results from the recent Network Participant's survey. The committee were in agreement that the annual Signature Event as well as the Postgraduate / ECR workshops on Leadership and Management in Research on Asia and the Pacific had been very positive programs for the Network. This year's signature event will be an exciting collaboration between the Arndt-Corden Division of Economics at the Australian National University (ANU) and The School of Economics and Finance, La Trobe University (LTU). Following on from the highly successful previous two Postgrad/ECR workshops led in 2007 by A/Prof Tim Scrase at the University of Wollongong and in 2008 by Prof Vicki Mackie at the University of Melbourne – the Committee agreed that EOIs would once again be invited to host the 2009 event and $20,000 made available to the successful applicant.
