Pacific Currents
THE NETWORK IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE ANOTHER EXCITING INITIATIVE IN ITS SPONSORSHIP OF PACIFIC CURRENTS Pacific Currents is the new electronic journal of the Australian Association for the Advancement of Pacific Studies (AAAPS). It aims to facilitate and catalyse connections and dialogue between scholars working in Pacific Studies in Australia, Pacific people in the region and in Australia as well as those working in government, non-government organisations, churches and corporations engaged with the Pacific. The idea of Pacific Currents has been around for some time. It was first mooted in January 2006 in the context of the inaugural conference of the Australian Association for the Advancement of Pacific Studies in Queensland. A combination of some funding from the Institute for Excellence in Asia-Pacific Studies received in 2007 and the 2008 sponsorship from the ARC APFRN has enabled the concept to be developed and an electronic template be designed. Pacific Currents can be accessed via the AAAPS website: http://www.aaaps.edu.au/?q=node/3
Melbourne Symposium enjoys successSYMPOSIUM - CROSSING BOUNDARIES: INTERROGATING IDENTITY POLITICS, POWER AND MEANINGS OF BUILT FORM IN SOUTHEAST ASIA THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE, 4 JUNE 2009 Congratulations to Anoma Pieris and the team at the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne who hosted the recent symposium.
The aim of the symposium was to address the gap between critical studies on identity politics in Southeast Asia and examinations of the dynamic production and use of built form in the region. It was also seeking to generate new spaces for cross-cultural and interdisciplinary discussion in this field of research, by bringing together early-career researchers/doctoral candidates (from the field of architecture and urban studies) and established scholars (from the fields of history, politics, geography, anthropology, urban studies, and architecture) within the boarder field of Southeast Asian studies. The participants represented all these different fields. There were over 40 participants, who came from Victoria, South Australia, N.S.W., the A.C.T., Indonesia and Singapore. The symposium was well attended by post-graduate research students and included presentations from four early career / PhD students. The symposium closed with the hope that it was the first of a series of annual events, and that the publication of proceedings from the symposium be forthcoming. Further information is available at the website http://www.abp.unimelb.edu.au/aboutus/events/conferences/crossing-boundaries/
