China Node

Introduction

The China node of the ARC Asia Pacific Futures Network is convened by Professor Stephanie Hemelryk Donald at the Institute for International Studies at the University of Technology, Sydney. The Node communications assistant is Dr Yi Zheng. It is both the NSW and the China hub for the Network.

The China Node supports the Network in developing projects focusing on China, and with an emphasis on activities that are cross-institutional, aimed at early career inclusion, and which cannot be funded from the Network's main funds.

Projects funded in 2006

  1. Doctoral Colloquium with Professor Gary Rawnsley (Nottingham University, Ningbo): "Understanding and Analysing Propaganda." June 21, 2006, UTS, Sydney. Four travel scholarships are granted to Ph.D students from outside Sydney to attend the workshop.
  2. Visit of Professor Zhang Xiaoming, author of "The Blue Book of Chinese Communications Policies," from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
  3. Melbourne "Internet Domains between China and India," Nov. 3, 2006.
  4. APFRN Signature Conference on "Media: Policies, Cultures and Futures in the Asia Pacific Region" Special Sydney Event: "Documentary Making in China." Guest Speakers include Dr. Paola Voci, University of Otago, New Zealand; Mr. Jiang Yue, Beijing; Mr. Cui Zi'en, Beijing. Nov. 25, 2006.
  5. Joint seminar with the China Research Group at UTS. Presentation by Professor Yingjin Zhang, Director of China Studies at the University of California, San Diego; November 21, 2006. Professor Zhang's visit is part of the China Node organized special Sydney event in conjunction with the APFRN 2006 signature communications conference.
